Zolt vs. YAZIO

TL;DR

  • YAZIO sets your calorie goal with a formula (Mifflin-St Jeor times an activity level). It doesn’t learn from your weight trend.
  • YAZIO is strong on recipes and intermittent fasting. AI photo logging is part of YAZIO Pro.
  • Zolt learns your burn from your logs and weigh-ins and adjusts your targets automatically, at $39.99 a year.

How your calorie goal is set

Both apps start from an estimate. The difference is what happens three weeks later, when your weight hasn’t done what the estimate predicted.

Zolt

  1. 1Zolt starts from an estimate too
  2. 2Each day it compares what you ate with how your weight trended
  3. 3It learns your real burn and moves your targets to keep your pace

YAZIO

  1. 1A formula estimates your burn from height, weight, age, sex, and activity
  2. 2YAZIO subtracts or adds calories for your weekly goal
  3. 3If progress stalls, you adjust the goal yourself
Zolt’s Energy screen shows your learned TDEE and what makes it up.

Lose, gain, or maintain weight with targets that adapt to your metabolism.

Zolt learns from logged nutrition and changes in body weight, then keeps calorie and protein targets aligned with the intended rate of progress. The adaptive engine works without Coach V2 and without Apple Watch.

Apple Watch is optional. It adds sleep, recovery, activity, workouts, and health insights. Watch calories do not drive Zolt’s learned TDEE or its updates.

How Zolt learns your TDEE explains expenditure, calorie targets, and the starting estimate.

The real difference

Our honest take

YAZIO is a polished, popular calorie counter with a big recipe library and fasting plans built in. Its calorie goal comes from a published formula, and you recalculate it yourself when things change. Zolt learns your real daily burn from what you eat and how your weight moves, then adjusts your targets for you. If you want the plan to keep up with your body, we recommend Zolt.

YAZIO is clear about its method: estimate your burn with a formula, then subtract or add calories for your goal. That is a reasonable starting point, but formulas can be off by a few hundred calories for any one person, and YAZIO leaves the correction to you. Zolt treats the starting estimate as a first guess and keeps refining it from your actual intake and weight trend.

A formula versus a feedback loop

YAZIO multiplies your BMR by an activity factor and adjusts for your weekly goal. If your weight doesn’t move as expected, its help center suggests adjusting your calorie and macro targets.

Zolt does that adjustment for you. It compares logged calories with your weight trend, works out what you actually burn, and updates the target. You can see the estimate change on the Energy screen.

Logging day to day

YAZIO has a barcode scanner, a database of more than 4 million items, quick add, and custom recipes. AI photo recognition moved into YAZIO Pro.

Zolt logs by photo, text, barcode, and recipes, and you can text meals and corrections to the coach in iMessage. Every log feeds the adaptive plan.

Exercise calories

By default, YAZIO adds logged or synced activity calories to your daily goal, and you can switch that off.

Zolt doesn’t need to add exercise calories back. Your weight trend already reflects everything you burned, so Apple Watch is optional and its calorie numbers don’t drive your targets.

Where YAZIO wins

YAZIO is well made and very popular. Its recipe library runs to thousands of dishes, fasting plans like 16:8 and 5:2 are built in, and it explains exactly how it calculates your goal, with sensible defaults like capping weight loss at 1 kg a week. Apple Health and Health Connect sync are free.

Take the coach where you already talk.

Text Zolt in iMessage, WhatsApp, or Telegram to log a meal, fix an entry, record your weight, or ask how today fits the plan. It uses your real data and makes the change for you.

Use ChatGPT or Claude every day? Connect Zolt to either one to log food and check your numbers without switching apps. Set up the connector.
