How Long Do Carbon-Plated Race Shoes Last?
Super shoes lose their running economy edge before they wear out. What the research shows after 450 km, and how to budget a race pair across a season.
Carbon-plated race shoes usually hold together for a few hundred miles, but their performance edge fades well before they look worn out. In the best study so far, a PEBA-foam super shoe lost its running economy advantage after 450 km (about 280 miles). At that point it performed like a comparable shoe with ordinary EVA foam.
Zolt uses 250 miles (400 km) as its default line for race shoes. That is a sensible upper limit for a pair you still want to race in. Keep the pair for races and a few hard sessions and you spend its best miles where they count.

What the research found
Rodrigo-Carranza, Hoogkamer, and colleagues had 22 trained male runners run at 13 km/h in four versions of a plated super shoe: new and 450 km worn pairs with a PEBA midsole, and new and 450 km worn pairs with an EVA midsole (Rodrigo-Carranza et al., 2024).
| Shoe | Energy cost (W/kg) |
|---|---|
| New PEBA | 14.87 |
| New EVA | 15.15 |
| Worn EVA, 450 km | 15.13 |
| Worn PEBA, 450 km | 15.21 |
Lower is better. New, the PEBA shoe clearly beat the EVA shoe. After 450 km, the PEBA shoe's energy cost rose significantly while the EVA shoe barely changed, and the two ended up with similar running economy. Canadian Running's summary puts it as a nearly 2% advantage when new and a 2.28% decline in the worn PEBA pair.
The limits matter. The runners were all men, and the study tested specific shoe models, so other super shoes may wear differently. The direction of the result is still useful: the lightest, bounciest foams appear to give up their advantage faster.
Not all racing foam wears the same way
A 2026 lab study tested the foam from an ASICS Metaspeed racing shoe, comparing a new shoe with one worn for 300 miles. The foam's mechanical response was largely preserved after 300 miles, and the authors suggest that racing shoes may last longer than common advice implies (McCulloch and Kuhl, 2026).
Treat that result with care. It is a preprint that has not been peer reviewed, it compares one new shoe with one worn shoe, and it tests the foam rather than a runner's economy. It does suggest the answer depends on the foam, which is why a single rule for every super shoe is shaky.
What the brands and testers say
Most brands do not publish a mileage figure for their race shoes. The clearest exception is extreme. For the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1, an Adidas product manager told Runner's World that every box included a card saying the shoe was designed for one race, meaning one marathon, plus some familiarization runs (Core77, citing Runner's World).
RunRepeat's testers, in their own view rather than a measured result, say most premium foams lose their "magic" within 100 to 200 miles and still train well afterwards. They advise against racing in premium-foam shoes with more than 200 km on them (RunRepeat foam guide).
A practical plan for a race pair
| Use | Rough budget |
|---|---|
| Break-in runs and strides | 10 to 20 mi |
| Key workouts and a tune-up race | 30 to 60 mi |
| Goal race | Race distance |
| Racing life | Up to about 250 mi, sooner for the lightest foams |
| After that | Tempo runs and training, until the normal signs of wear show up |
Budgets like these are planning numbers, not measured limits. The point is to spend a race pair's best miles on the days that count.
- Buy the race pair early enough to test it in a few sessions, but not so early that you train it flat.
- Keep it out of easy runs. A daily trainer handles those; see shoe rotation, explained.
- Track it separately. A race pair only covers a few miles a week, so it is easy to lose count across a season.
- Demote, do not discard. A pair past its racing life can still work for faster training runs until it shows the usual signs in how many miles running shoes last.
Common questions
Do super shoes wear out faster than regular trainers? The race-day advantage fades faster. The shoe itself can keep working for training afterwards.
Does the carbon plate wear out? Nobody has measured it well yet. The preprint's authors point out that they did not test the plate or the upper, only the foam.
Should I save my race shoes for race day only? Wear them a few times first to make sure they fit and you are comfortable at race pace. After that, keep them for the sessions where the extra performance matters.
How do I know how many miles are on my race pair? Track it as its own pair. In Zolt, you add a race pair next to your trainers and change the shoe on the runs you do in it.
Track this automatically in Zolt
Add your race pair in Zolt with its own 250-mile line. Every run you assign to it counts toward that line, so you know how many good race miles are left.
