What happens after you photograph a meal

Both apps can log a meal from a photo. What they do with it next is where they split.

Zolt

  1. 1You snap, type, scan, or text the meal
  2. 2Zolt logs calories, protein, carbs, and fat against today’s targets
  3. 3Your weigh-ins tune tomorrow’s targets to your goal pace

Oura

  1. 1You snap or describe the meal
  2. 2Oura gives it a Nutrition Level and rates protein, fiber, sugar and more
  3. 3Advisor can suggest swaps. No calorie target to hit
Zolt’s weight goal card: your current pace, whether you’re on track, and an estimated finish date.

Lose, gain, or maintain weight with targets that adapt to your metabolism.

Zolt learns from logged nutrition and changes in body weight, then keeps calorie and protein targets aligned with the intended rate of progress. The adaptive engine works without Coach V2 and without Apple Watch.

Apple Watch is optional. It adds sleep, recovery, activity, workouts, and health insights. Watch calories do not drive Zolt’s learned TDEE or its updates.

How Zolt learns your TDEE explains expenditure, calorie targets, and the starting estimate.

The real difference

Our honest take

Oura is a sleep and readiness ring first. Its Meals feature rates what you eat as Limited, Fair, Good, or Nutritious, and Oura deliberately avoids calorie counts and numeric targets. That suits plenty of people. If you are trying to lose, gain, or hold a specific weight, though, you need numbers, and Zolt gives you calorie and protein targets that adapt to how your weight actually moves.

Oura and Zolt both log meals from a photo, but they want different things from you. Oura nudges food quality and keeps numbers out of the way. Zolt treats calories and protein as the levers for a weight goal: it compares what you ate with how your weight changed, learns your real daily burn, and sets targets for the pace you picked.

Quality ratings versus a calorie plan

Oura Meals gives each meal a Nutrition Level and rates protein, fiber, processing, added sugar, fat, and carbs as low, moderate, or high. Oura says the feature is meant to de-emphasize strict quantification.

That is a fair choice for general health. A cut or a bulk is different, because the rate of change depends on how much you eat. Zolt shows the calories and grams, and adjusts the target when your weight trend says it should.

Calories burned on a ring

Oura’s calorie number is an activity goal. It counts movement above a threshold, estimated from motion and heart rate, with a baseline from your profile that shifts with Readiness.

Zolt does not rely on any wearable for its estimate. It learns your total daily burn from logged intake and weigh-ins, so the number reflects what your body actually did.

Using both

If you love your Oura for sleep, keep it. Zolt covers the part Oura deliberately leaves out: a weight plan with numbers that adapt.

If you are deciding where to spend first and your goal is a weight change, Zolt is the direct route. Apple Watch can add sleep and recovery context, and you can skip it.

Where Oura wins

Oura’s ring is comfortable enough to sleep in every night, and its sleep and readiness tracking is highly rated. The membership is cheap next to other wearables. Meals is easy to use, Oura Advisor can draw on your meal history, and pairing a Dexcom Stelo adds glucose responses to your meals.
