Zolt vs. WHOOP

TL;DR

  • WHOOP is a band plus a yearly membership that scores your recovery, strain, and sleep.
  • It has no built-in food logging or calorie targets. Nutrition only arrives by syncing from other apps.
  • Zolt is the nutrition side: food logging and calorie and macro targets that adapt to your weight trend, from $39.99 a year with no hardware.

Choose Zolt if…

  • ✓Your main goal is losing fat, building muscle, or holding your weight.
  • ✓You want calorie and macro targets that change when your progress does.
  • ✓You would rather not buy hardware or pay $199 or more a year.

Choose WHOOP if…

  • ✓Daily recovery and strain scores are what you check first.
  • ✓You want a screenless band you wear 24/7, including in bed.
  • ✓Health extras like blood testing, ECG, or blood pressure matter to you.

Same day, two different questions

WHOOP works out what your body can handle. Zolt works out what to eat. Here is what each one does with your data.

Zolt

  1. 1You log meals by photo, text, or barcode, and weigh in
  2. 2Zolt compares what you ate with how your weight moved
  3. 3Your calorie and protein targets adjust to keep your goal on pace

WHOOP

  1. 1The band reads heart rate and HRV all day and night
  2. 2You get Recovery, Strain, and Sleep scores
  3. 3A target strain range tells you how hard to train
Zolt’s Energy screen. Your daily burn is learned from your logs and weigh-ins, not from a wrist sensor.

Lose, gain, or maintain weight with targets that adapt to your metabolism.

Zolt learns from logged nutrition and changes in body weight, then keeps calorie and protein targets aligned with the intended rate of progress. The adaptive engine works without Coach V2 and without Apple Watch.

Apple Watch is optional. It adds sleep, recovery, activity, workouts, and health insights. Watch calories do not drive Zolt’s learned TDEE or its updates.

How Zolt learns your TDEE explains expenditure, calorie targets, and the starting estimate.

The real difference

Our honest take

WHOOP and Zolt answer different questions. WHOOP tells you how recovered you are and how hard to push today. Zolt tells you how much to eat to lose, gain, or maintain weight, and adjusts that number as your weight moves. If your goal is a body composition change, start with Zolt. If you want round-the-clock recovery data from a band, WHOOP is very good at that, and the two can live side by side.

WHOOP estimates the calories you burn from your profile and heart rate. That is useful context, but it is a sensor estimate, and WHOOP has no place to log food or set an intake target. Zolt starts from the other end. It compares what you actually ate with how your weight actually changed, learns your real daily burn from that, and sets calorie and protein targets for the pace you chose.

Calories burned is not a calorie target

WHOOP works out calories burned from your height, weight, age, and sex, then adds heart-rate-driven activity on top. WHOOP itself suggests trusting the multi-day trend over any single day.

Knowing roughly what you burned still leaves the real question open: what should you eat? Zolt answers it by learning your expenditure from your intake and weight trend, then setting the target for you.

Where food fits in each app

WHOOP does not have its own food database, barcode scanner, or photo logging. You can sync nutrition in from another app or tag behaviors in the Journal.

In Zolt, food logging is the core of the app. You can snap a photo, type what you ate, scan a barcode, or text it to the coach in iMessage, and every log feeds the adaptive plan.

Using both

Plenty of people will want WHOOP on their wrist and a separate nutrition plan. That split works: WHOOP for training load and recovery, Zolt for intake and weight.

If you only want one subscription and your goal is a cut, bulk, or maintenance phase, Zolt covers the nutrition job directly. Apple Watch can add sleep and recovery context, but Zolt doesn’t require it.

Where WHOOP wins

WHOOP has one of the deepest recovery models in consumer wearables. It reads HRV and heart rate around the clock, ties a daily strain target to how recovered you are, and has strong sleep tools like the Sleep Planner and haptic alarm. Its AI coach comes with every tier, and higher tiers add ECG, blood pressure insights, and optional blood testing.

Take the coach where you already talk.

Text Zolt in iMessage, WhatsApp, or Telegram to log a meal, fix an entry, record your weight, or ask how today fits the plan. It uses your real data and makes the change for you.

Use ChatGPT or Claude every day? Connect Zolt to either one to log food and check your numbers without switching apps. Set up the connector.
