Compare beer, wine, spirits, seltzer, and cocktails by serving calories and standard drinks without confusing lower-calorie with healthier.
The lowest-calorie common choices are usually a measured serving of 80-proof spirits with a zero-calorie mixer, a hard seltzer, or a light beer. Dry wine can also fit, but pour size matters. Sweet cocktails often carry the most uncertainty because both the alcohol and the recipe can vary.

Compare calories per standard drink
Serving calories alone can be misleading. A 16-ounce 7% IPA contains close to two US standard drinks, while a 12-ounce 5% beer contains about one. The larger IPA should not be compared with the beer as though both represent the same alcohol dose.
NIAAA's standard-drink guide makes the same point: container size does not tell you the alcohol content. Light beer also is not necessarily much lighter in alcohol. NIAAA notes that many light beers average about 4.2% ABV compared with 5% for regular beer.
The lowest-calorie orders are simple
If calories are the only comparison, the easiest orders are:
- A measured shot of vodka, gin, rum, tequila, or whiskey with soda water
- A labeled 12-ounce hard seltzer
- A labeled 12-ounce light beer
- A measured glass of dry wine
- A spirit with a diet or zero-calorie mixer
The word measured matters. A heavy 2-ounce pour of 80-proof spirits contains about one-third more alcohol and alcohol calories than a 1.5-ounce pour. A double is not a low-calorie drink simply because the mixer is soda water.
Where cocktail calories come from
A cocktail total can include:
- The base spirit
- A second spirit or liqueur
- Juice, syrup, cream, or coconut milk
- Sugared rims and garnishes
- A larger-than-standard pour

Build the choice around the whole night
A lower-calorie drink can create room in a calorie target, but the decision does not end at the glass. A systematic review of controlled trials found that people generally did not reduce food intake enough to compensate for alcohol energy. Read the review.
If the lower-calorie option leads to more drinks, it may not lower the night's total. Enter the quantity you expect, not only the first serving.
