Why the Scale Jumped After Drinking
Separate water, glycogen, food mass, and sodium from actual tissue gain after drinking, then decide what to do with the next weigh-ins.
A higher scale reading after drinking usually includes changes in water, glycogen, digestive contents, meal timing, and ordinary measurement noise. Some tissue gain is possible if the night created an energy surplus, but a sudden multi-pound jump is unlikely to be entirely body fat.

Researchers have measured at least about 3 grams of water stored with each gram of restored muscle glycogen under some conditions. Read the human glycogen study. A higher-carbohydrate restaurant meal can therefore move body weight quickly without the same amount of fat gain.
Do not blame dehydration for everything
Alcohol can affect fluid balance, but the common story that every hangover symptom or scale change is simply dehydration is too neat. A 2024 review concluded that dehydration and hangover are co-occurring but partly independent effects, and that drinking water had only a modest effect on next-day hangover severity. Read the review.
Hydrate normally because thirst and fluid loss still matter. Do not promise yourself that gallons of water will erase the night, and do not force water beyond comfort.
Check the arithmetic before calling the jump fat
Suppose the scale rises 3 pounds overnight. Treating all 3 pounds as new fat would require an enormous energy surplus beyond maintenance. The exact conversion between calories and tissue change is not fixed, so this is not a diagnostic calculation. It is a plausibility check: the scale can move much faster than fat tissue.
Now estimate the night itself. If the drinks and food added 1,000 calories above maintenance, that is meaningful. It is still not enough to explain several pounds of pure fat. Log the 1,000-calorie estimate and let the transient parts settle.

What to do for the next three days
- Resume your usual calorie and protein targets.
- Drink according to thirst and your normal routine.
- Keep sodium and carbohydrate intake reasonably consistent.
- Weigh under the same morning conditions if weighing is not distressing.
- Judge the trend, not the highest point.
Do not fast all day, add punishment cardio, or try to sweat out the number. Those responses make the week harder to interpret and can set up another overeating cycle.
When the increase deserves more attention
Seek medical guidance for rapid weight change accompanied by marked swelling, shortness of breath, chest symptoms, severe vomiting, confusion, inability to keep fluids down, or other concerning symptoms. A content article cannot distinguish ordinary fluctuation from a medical problem.

How long will the extra weight last? There is no reliable universal countdown. The cause, size of the meal, usual diet, and individual fluid response all matter.
Should I delete the weigh-in? Usually no. A trend system needs ordinary high and low days. Add context and keep collecting comparable measurements.
Can alcohol make the scale lower the next morning? Yes. Changed fluid balance can briefly move it either way. A lower reading does not prove fat loss either.
