A 2026 Indica rice study reported a mean yield of 3.01 times dry weight. Other varieties and methods can differ.

Yield = cooked weight ÷ dry weight × 100. You can edit the estimate.

Rice absorbs water, so cooked weight is greater than dry weight. The preset is an estimate from Indica varieties, not a universal factor for brown rice, instant rice, or every cooking method. Measure your own drained or absorbed-water batch when possible.

How the calculation works

Estimated cooked weight = dry weight × cooking yield ÷ 100. Reverse it by dividing cooked weight by the yield fraction. The preparation preset supplies a starting estimate that you can edit.

My batch uses your measured weights: dry equivalent = cooked portion × dry batch ÷ cooked batch. Use the same edible food for all three weights.

A worked example

At a 301% yield, 100 g of dry rice becomes about 301 g cooked. If your own 200 g dry batch weighs 560 g cooked, a 140 g portion corresponds to 50 g dry.

Common questions

Can I use this for brown or instant rice?

Use My batch. The starting estimate comes from Indica rice research and does not establish the yield of brown or instant rice.

Is the rice package nutrition for dry weight?

Check the label for dry, uncooked, cooked, or prepared wording. Match your logging weight to that basis. Added butter, oil, and sauces need their own entries.

Can I convert cups?

This tool converts weight. A cup of dry rice and a cup of cooked rice have different densities. Use grams, ounces, or pounds from a scale.
