How Zolt Treats Apple Watch Calorie Estimates

Why wearable calorie estimates can vary, how to improve the source data, and why a Zolt calorie target is not copied from Move calories.

Apple Watch calorie values are estimates. They can be useful for comparing activity, but they should not be treated as an exact measurement of energy expenditure.

Why the estimate varies

Apple Watch uses sensor data and the personal information in your Health profile to estimate calories. Device fit, activity type, movement pattern, heart-rate availability, calibration, and profile details can all affect the result.

Apple recommends keeping height, weight, age, and other Health Details current, choosing the correct workout type, wearing the Watch correctly, and calibrating it for better Workout and Activity measurements. Read Apple's accuracy guidance and calibration steps.

Even with good setup, the result remains an estimate. A wrist-worn device does not directly measure all the energy your body uses.

What Zolt does with the number

Your calorie target in Zolt is not a copy of the Watch's Move calories or a simple instruction to eat back every active calorie. Zolt's target is based on your goal and the nutrition and weight history available to the app.

This distinction helps keep a volatile workout estimate from becoming a matching jump in your food target. You can still use Apple Watch activity in Zolt's activity and training views.

For the public explanation of target updates, see What is Adaptive TDEE? and Why your targets change.

How to use Watch calories

  • Compare similar activities under similar conditions.
  • Look at trends rather than treating one workout as exact.
  • Keep your Health profile and Watch calibration current.
  • Use the workout type that best matches the activity.
  • Do not use the estimate alone to make a large nutrition change.

If the value looks implausible

  1. Check the workout and heart-rate record in Apple Fitness or Health.
  2. Confirm that your Health Details are current.
  3. Check Watch fit and heart-rate permissions.
  4. Review calibration and Location Services for outdoor activity.
  5. Look for duplicate workouts from another app.

If Zolt shows a different activity value from the source record, contact support with the affected workout and screenshots.
